Philips HeartStart OnSite vs ZOLL AED Plus: Which Should You Buy?

These are the two AEDs most first-time buyers end up choosing between, and the decision usually gets made on the $395 gap in purchase price. That is the wrong number. Over the life of the device, the gap almost entirely disappears.

Assumptions: prices as of August 2026 at published rates; adult pads only; no deployment; device retired at year 10. Add paediatric pads to both if children may be treated.

The $395 price gap becomes $60 over ten years

The AED Plus costs more up front and then barely costs anything to run — five-year pads and a five-year battery, bought once in a decade for $340. The OnSite's cheaper pads are replaced more than twice as often and its battery costs more than twice as much, totalling $795. Net difference across ten years: about $60.

So this is not really a price decision. It is a decision about CPR feedback and how many times you want to remember to order something.

Where the AED Plus wins

Real CPR Help. This is the substantive difference. The OnSite gives a metronome — it tells you how fast to push. The AED Plus measures actual compression depth through the CPR-D-padz and says "push harder" or "good compressions". Untrained rescuers overwhelmingly compress too shallow, and shallow compressions move very little blood. If your AED will be grabbed by whoever is closest rather than by a trained responder, this is worth more than any other difference on the page.

One reorder per decade. Five reorder events versus one is five chances for a lapse. The most common cause of a non-functional AED is nobody remembering.

The pads are a rescue kit. CPR-D-padz ship with gloves, wipes, a razor, scissors and a barrier mask — the things you actually need on a hairy or sweaty chest and do not want to be hunting for.

Where the OnSite wins

Lower cash up front. $395 is real money if you are buying several units or working from a fixed grant. The ten-year figures converge, but the cash flow does not.

The i-button. Press it and the device tells you what is wrong out loud. Every other AED makes you interpret an indicator. For a site where the AED is managed by an administrator with no clinical background, this genuinely reduces support calls.

Simplicity. Pull the green tab, press the green button. It is the most approachable AED on the market, and it arrives ready to mount with a spare set of pads already in the case.

Smaller and lighter, which matters for a discreet wall location or a go-bag.

Our verdict

Your situation Buy
Untrained bystanders most likely to use it ZOLL AED Plus
Nobody reliably tracks expiration dates ZOLL AED Plus
Fixed budget or grant, buying now Philips OnSite
Managed by non-clinical admin staff Philips OnSite (i-button)
Home or small, discreet location Philips OnSite
Lowest running cost / least admin ZOLL AED Plus

Our honest default for a workplace is the AED Plus — the CPR depth feedback is the single feature most likely to change an outcome, and it costs about $60 more across ten years. Choose the OnSite when up-front cash is the binding constraint, or when the person minding the AED needs a device that diagnoses itself out loud.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ZOLL AED Plus worth the extra money over the Philips OnSite?

Over ten years the difference is only about $60, because the AED Plus uses five-year pads and a five-year battery while the OnSite needs pads roughly every two years and a battery every four. The real question is whether you want CPR depth feedback, which the AED Plus provides and the OnSite does not.

Which is easier to use?

The Philips OnSite is generally considered the more approachable device — pull the green tab, press the green button, follow the voice prompts — and its information button speaks any fault aloud. The AED Plus is also straightforward but offers more coaching during CPR.

Do both need separate pediatric pads?

Yes. The OnSite uses an Infant/Child SMART Pads cartridge (M5072A) and the AED Plus uses Pedi-padz II (8900-0810-01). Both carry their own expiration dates.

How many times will I replace consumables over ten years?

Roughly five times with the Philips OnSite (three pad sets and two batteries) versus once with the ZOLL AED Plus, whose pads and battery both run five years and come due together.
