The ZOLL AED Plus is one of the most widely deployed AEDs in the country — and one of the most commonly mis-ordered, because it accepts two completely different adult electrode pads and uses a battery arrangement unlike almost any other AED. Here is exactly what your unit takes.

CPR-D-padz or Stat-padz II — which should you buy?

Both are genuine ZOLL adult electrodes and both work in the AED Plus. They are not interchangeable in practice, though, because they behave differently in a rescue and cost differently over time.

CPR-D-padz 8900-0800-01

A single one-piece electrode that positions both pads at once, using CPR hand placement as the landmark. This is the pad that enables Real CPR Help — the AED Plus reads compression rate and depth through it and coaches the rescuer with an adaptive metronome and prompts like "push harder". It carries a 5-year shelf life, the longest of any defibrillator electrode sold, which conveniently matches the battery interval.

The package also includes a rescue kit: gloves, a wet wipe, a dry wipe, a barrier mask, a razor and scissors.

Stat-padz II 8900-0801-01

Two separate pads, placed individually. Lower cost per set, but a 2-year shelf life rather than five — so over a ten-year device life you buy roughly five sets instead of two. They also fit the ZOLL AED Pro, which makes them convenient for organisations running both models.

Our recommendation: for a fixed installation — an office, school, gym or church — CPR-D-padz are usually the better buy. The 5-year interval halves your admin burden, the cost per year is comparable, and Real CPR Help is the AED Plus's genuine advantage over other units. Choose Stat-padz II if you already stock them for AED Pro units, or if you need a lower up-front cost.

The battery: ten CR123 cells, not a battery pack

This is where the AED Plus differs from nearly every other AED on the market. Rather than a single sealed battery pack, it runs on ten Type 123 lithium cells, sold as a set under part number 8000-0807-01. They give roughly a 5-year standby life, matching the CPR-D-padz interval.

Two practical consequences:

• Replace all ten at once. Mixing old and new cells is the most common cause of a unit that passes self-test but fails under the load of a real shock.
• Use the ZOLL-specified set. Generic CR123 cells vary in capacity and discharge behaviour, and the AED Plus self-test is calibrated against the specified battery.

If the unit travels by air, the FAA-approved aviation battery pack 8000-003000-01 is the compliant option.

Pediatric coverage

Pedi-padz II 8900-0810-01 are a separate purchase, and the AED Plus detects automatically when they are connected and switches to a paediatric energy sequence — there is no key or switch to remember. If children may ever be treated on your site, keep an in-date set alongside the adult pads. They carry their own expiration date, and they are the item most often found expired during an inspection.

Always follow the date printed on your specific pads and battery — shelf life runs from manufacture, not from the day you install them.

What to replace after a rescue

Always replace the pads after any deployment, even if no shock was advised — the gel is compromised once applied. Check the battery indicator too: a long resuscitation with multiple shocks draws significant capacity, and a set nearing the end of its standby life should be replaced rather than trusted for the next call.
