Why Is My AED Beeping? Chirp Codes by Brand and How to Fix Them
A beeping or chirping AED is not broken — it is reporting. Every modern AED runs automatic self-tests on a schedule, and the chirp is how it tells you one of those tests failed. The good news is that the cause is almost never the device itself.
The four causes, in order of likelihood
- Pads expired, missing or not seated — by far the most common
- Battery low or expired
- The device was opened or used and not reset
- An internal fault — genuinely rare, and usually means end of life
Fast triage — five minutes
- Look at the status indicator before anything else. Every AED has one, and it will usually narrow the problem immediately.
- Check the pads. Read the printed expiration date, and confirm the cartridge or connector is fully seated. Re-seat it firmly.
- Check the battery. Read its install-by date. If the unit has an information button, press it.
- Confirm nothing is half-installed. A partially inserted battery or pad cartridge will fail self-test while looking perfectly fine.
- Note what changed recently. Did the beeping start right after someone swapped pads, or opened the lid to look inside?
If it started beeping just after a pad change, re-seat the pads
This accounts for a large share of the calls we take. A pad cartridge that is almost clicked home looks installed but does not pass the connection test. Pull it out and push it back in until it seats positively. On cartridge-based units like the Philips HeartStart OnSite, this fixes the problem more often than anything else.
Where to look, brand by brand
Specific chirp patterns vary by model and firmware, and the indicator on your device is the authoritative source. Here is where to find it on the units we see most.
ZOLL AED Plus / AED 3 / AED Pro
The AED Plus carries a status indicator window on the housing showing a green check when the last self-test passed. ZOLL units also speak: a "change batteries" prompt on power-up is unambiguous, and the AED Plus runs on ten CR123 cells, so a low reading usually means the whole set is due — they should be replaced together, not individually. Philips HeartStart OnSite / HS1 / Home / FRx
Philips units are the easiest to diagnose because of the information button (i-button). Press it and the device speaks the specific problem rather than making you guess. A blinking indicator plus periodic chirp is the standard "attention needed" state. LIFEPAK CR2 / CR Plus / LIFEPAK 1000
The CR2 shows a readiness indicator and gives spoken guidance through ClearVoice. Remember the CR2 runs pads and battery on the same four-year cycle, so if one has expired the other is usually close behind — check both while you are there. See the CR2 pads and battery guide.
HeartSine samaritan PAD
HeartSine combines pads and battery into a single Pad-Pak cartridge with one expiration date, which makes diagnosis unusually simple: if the status indicator is unhappy and the Pad-Pak is out of date, replacing the cartridge addresses both possible causes at once.
Defibtech Lifeline / Lifeline AUTO / VIEW
Defibtech units use an Active Status Indicator that reports readiness at a glance. Note the Lifeline family uses a separate 9V lithium cell inside the battery pack on some configurations — worth confirming which pack you have before ordering.
Cardiac Science Powerheart G3 / G5
Powerheart units show a Rescue Ready indicator: green means the last self-test passed, and a change signals attention needed. Note that the Powerheart G3 has reached end of life — if yours is chirping and consumables are in date, that is a strong signal it is time to plan a replacement rather than keep servicing it.
When it is the pads vs the battery
A rough rule: if the beeping is continuous or frequent and the device will not settle, suspect the battery. If it is periodic — a chirp every minute or so — and the unit otherwise looks healthy, suspect the pads or a seating problem. Either way, read both printed dates before ordering, because on most units the two intervals do not line up and you may be about to replace one item twice.

When beeping means the AED itself is finished
If the pads and battery are both in date and correctly seated, and the unit still fails self-test, you are likely looking at an internal fault. AEDs have a service life of roughly 8 to 10 years from manufacture. Past that point, repeated self-test failures are the device telling you it has reached the end — and on discontinued models, replacement parts and support may no longer be available at all.
What not to do
- Do not ignore it or mute it. A chirping AED is a device that may not work in an emergency, and in most states running a unit that fails self-test puts your programme out of compliance with maintenance requirements.
- Do not remove the battery to stop the noise. That leaves you with no AED at all.
- Do not open sealed pad packaging to inspect it. Breaking the seal ends the pad's usable life immediately.

Why is my AED beeping?

How do I stop my AED from beeping?

My AED started beeping right after I changed the pads. Why?
Almost always because the pad cartridge or connector is not fully seated. Remove it and reinsert it until it clicks positively into place, then allow the device to run its self-test again.
Can I keep using an AED that is beeping?
It should be treated as not rescue-ready and repaired before it is needed. In a genuine emergency you would still use it, since an AED that may work is better than none, but a chirping unit must be diagnosed and fixed rather than left on the wall.
