Can You Use Expired AED Pads? What Actually Happens
Short answer: expired AED pads might still work — but you have no way of knowing whether yours will, and you should never plan around them. There is one important exception, covered below, where using expired pads is absolutely the right call.
Here is what actually degrades, what it means for your AED programme, and what to do if you have just discovered an out-of-date set on the wall.
What physically fails in an expired pad
An AED electrode is not a passive sticker. It does two jobs, and expiry degrades both.
The conductive gel dries out
The gel is what carries current between the electrode and the patient's chest. As it dries, two things happen. The pad stops adhering properly — and a pad that lifts at the edge during compressions is a pad that is no longer making full contact. And the impedance rises, meaning the AED must push the same energy through a worse connection. Some units compensate; all of them do it less well than through a fresh pad.
The electrodes corrode
The metal element degrades over time exactly as any metal does, even inside a sealed pouch. This is why the seal being intact tells you nothing. Manufacturers set expiration dates on the tested integrity of the components, not on whether the packet has been opened.
The AED may simply refuse
This is the part people do not expect. Many modern AEDs check the pads on connection, and some will throw an error or refuse to proceed if they detect a pad cartridge that is out of date or failing self-test. On those units, expired pads do not degrade performance — they can stop the rescue before it starts.
The exception: in a real emergency, use them
If someone is in cardiac arrest and expired pads are the only pads you have, use them. Call 911, start CPR, and apply the AED. Defibrillation with a compromised pad is vastly better than no defibrillation at all, and survival falls with every minute of delay. Never withhold a shock because of a date on a packet.
This is a reason to fix your replacement schedule tomorrow — not a reason to hesitate today.
What it means for compliance
Beyond whether the pads work, there is a programme question. Many state AED laws require that devices be maintained and tested in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines — and the manufacturer's guidelines include the expiration date. Running a unit on out-of-date consumables can therefore put an otherwise well-run programme out of compliance, independent of whether the pads would have functioned.

"But my AED shows a green ready light"
The readiness indicator confirms the device passed its last self-test. On most units that test covers the battery and internal electronics — it is not a verification that the gel on your pads is still moist enough to conduct through a patient's chest hair and sweat during compressions. A green light and expired pads can coexist quite happily. Trust the printed date, not the indicator.
What to do right now
- Read the date on the pouch, not the date you think you last ordered. Shelf life runs from manufacture, so a set that sat in a cupboard for a year before installation expires a year sooner than you would expect.
- Check the pediatric set too. On models that use separate paediatric pads, this is the item most often found expired — nobody looks at it because it is rarely used.
- Order replacements now, and keep the expired set in the cabinet until the new ones arrive. Expired pads beat an empty cabinet.
- Set the next reminder. Order roughly 60 days before expiry so you never have a coverage gap.

Can you test whether an expired pad still works?
Not meaningfully, and not without destroying it. Opening the pouch to inspect the gel ends the pad's usable life immediately — once the seal is broken the gel begins drying in earnest, so an inspection guarantees the outcome you were trying to rule out. There is no home test. The expiration date is the only signal you have.
