LIFEPAK CR2 Pads & Battery: What You Need and When to Replace
The LIFEPAK CR2 is one of the simplest AEDs to maintain, for one reason: it uses a single electrode set for both adults and children, and its pads and battery run on the same four-year clock. No pediatric pads to track separately, no staggered replacement schedule. Here is what your unit takes.

One electrode set covers every patient
Most AEDs require you to buy, store and track a separate set of pediatric pads. The CR2 does not. The QUIK-STEP adult/child electrodes 11101-000021 are rated for all patients, and pediatric rescues are handled by pressing the Child Mode button on the device rather than by swapping hardware.
Two practical benefits:
- Nothing to forget. The most common finding in an AED inspection is an expired set of pediatric pads that nobody has looked at in three years. On the CR2 that failure mode does not exist.
- Nothing to fumble. In a real paediatric emergency, a rescuer presses a button instead of hunting for a second cartridge under pressure.

The four-year cycle
This is the CR2's other maintenance advantage. Pads are 4-year electrodes and the battery carries a 4-year standby life when installed in a device that has not been used. A new unit ships with both, which means they expire at roughly the same time — so you place one reorder every four years rather than juggling two schedules.

Where you store it matters
The CR2 battery has published environmental limits that are easy to breach without realising:
- Operating: 0–50°C (32–122°F)
- Long-term storage: 0–25°C (32–77°F)
- Short-term storage: −30–60°C (−22–140°F), for up to one week
- Humidity: 5–95% non-condensing
Note how narrow the long-term window is. A CR2 living in a vehicle boot, an unconditioned warehouse or an outdoor cabinet through a hot summer spends months above 25°C — within the short-term range, but well outside what the battery is rated to sit in permanently. If that describes your installation, expect real-world standby life shorter than four years, inspect more often, and consider a temperature-rated cabinet.
Which CR2 do you have?
The CR2 ships in several connectivity configurations, and it changes which features you have — though not which consumables you buy. Pads and battery are identical across all of them.
Per the manufacturer's specification, cprINSIGHT analysis (which lets the device analyse the heart rhythm while compressions continue), bilingual switching and remote readiness monitoring are features of the connected Wi-Fi models. The USB-only version does not include them. If you are unsure which you have, the label on the back of the device identifies the configuration.
What to replace after a rescue
Replace the electrode pads after any deployment, even if no shock was advised. The battery is more nuanced on the CR2 than on most units: it is rated for roughly 166 discharges at 200 J, so a single rescue does not exhaust it — but the CR2 escalates from 200 J to 300 J and then to 360 J on subsequent shocks, so a long resuscitation draws considerably more than the headline figure suggests. After any multi-shock event, check the readiness indicator and replace the battery if it is anywhere near the end of its four-year window.
