Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) claims thousands of lives annually in the United States alone. In these critical moments, the prompt administration of CPR and immediate use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can dramatically improve survival rates. Ensuring that your AED is always in prime working condition is not just a matter of compliance, itās in ensuring overall emergency preparedness and safety in your facility.
The longevity of your AED significantly depends on its care and usage. New AED units have a potential lifespan of 8-10 years from the date of manufacture. Factors such as usage frequency and storage conditions play a crucial role in reaching that lifespan. For instance, an AED kept in an office or storage cabinet and rarely used will likely outlast one placed in the trunk of a police vehicle due to the difference in environment and exposure to harsh conditions. After an AED has reached the end of its lifespan it is important to replace it with a new unit to ensure that it is able to properly function should it be needed in an emergency.
The primary maintenance oversight with AEDs involves not replacing the pads and batteries before they expire. Typically, these components are viable for 2-5 years, varying by unit. It is important to ensure that both pads and batteries are up to date for your unit as they can affect pad adhesion and the ability to deliver a life saving shock. To guarantee proper maintenance, recording and tracking their expiration dates is essential for uninterrupted AED performance. There are available AED Maintenance ProgramsĀ to help notify you when maintenance is required.

The Zoll AED Plus and Defibtech Lifeline units have maintenance indicators
AEDs are engineered to conduct automatic self-tests to ensure their functionality. Should any of these tests fail or detect a problem, the AED will emit a beeping sound signaling the need for servicing. Some AED models are equipped with an information button, providing detailed explanations for what needs to be serviced, like replacing the electrode pads or battery.

Regular physical inspections are equally important to confirm the AEDās readiness. Just because there is no audible indicator that something is wrong with your unit does not ensure your AED is fully operational. Look out for any dirt, damage, and expiration dates that could affect functionality. Even if there are no audible alerts, a physical inspection may reveal operation issues or other concerns.
An AED is a critical component of your facilityās safety program. Understanding and adhering to proper maintenance schedules, recognizing the signs of wear, and promptly addressing any issues ensures that your AED remains reliable in the event of a cardiac emergency. Across America there are numerous rural communities spread far and wide from one another. Unfortunately, the delayed arrival of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in these areas is a longstanding issue especially in the event of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) where every minute counts. The implementation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) is a revolutionary step in enhancing emergency response. In this blog weāll explore the pivotal role of AEDs in rural areas and their profound impact.
Imagine living on a farm where your closest neighbor isnāt for miles. If you experience cardiac arrest and after calling 911 you can wait over 10 minutes for help to arrive. This scenario is very real for those living in rural areas.
Ā
Time is of the essence when someone falls victim to SCA. For every minute that goes by without CPR and defibrillation, the chance of survival drops 10 percent. According to an article published by the National Library of Medicine, In rural areas, EMS response times are typically more than 14 minutes* because they have to cover longer distances in their communities.
Ā
AEDs are lightweight portable devices that are made to save lives in the event of someone experiencing cardiac arrest. AEDs are able to be used on individuals of all ages, from children to adults, with the correct electrode pad for the victim. By positioning AEDs in rural areas the gap until professional help arrives is significantly decreased.
Advancements in technology have significantly enhanced the functionality of AEDs in rural areas. Features like voice guidance and visual prompts ensure that even those without formal training can use the devices effectively. Additionally, some AEDs such as the Zoll AED 3 offer a universal electrode pad that can be used on both Adults and Children, eliminating the need for carrying two separate pads. The line of HeartSine AEDs have a long pad and battery lifespan that reduces maintenance costs. These units also have an Ingress Protection (IP) rating of 56 making them some of the most durable units available.
Ā
In addition to AEDs, rural areas could benefit from emergency devices to save lives in critical situations until EMS arrives. The LifeVac, a rescue suction device, offers a simple yet effective solution to a choking emergency, providing a non-invasive way to clear the airway when traditional methods fail. Similarly, Stop the Bleed kits are invaluable in rural settings, where medical help might be delayed. These kits contain essential tools like tourniquets, pressure dressings, and hemostatic agents to control severe bleeding. Both the LifeVac and Stop the Bleed kits embody the principle of being prepared for emergencies, ensuring that individuals can take immediate action to save lives, even in the most remote locations.

When it comes to public safety, one piece of equipment stands out for its life saving capabilities: the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). All AEDs are made to be accessible and user-friendly. However, simply having an AED is not enough. The placement within an organization is critical to its effective utilization during emergencies. Whether you are with a school, business, or place of worship, it is important to follow the best practices for AED placement and training.
The key to AED effectiveness is a rapid response. The American Heart Association emphasizes that the chances of survival decrease by 7% to 10% with every minute that defibrillation is delayed. This statistic underlines the necessity of strategic placement. AEDs should be readily accessible, clearly marked, and easy to retrieve in a matter of seconds, not minutes.
A thorough site assessment is the first step in determining the specific needs of your facility regarding AED installation. Key factors to look for include:

When it comes to heart related emergencies thereās often confusion between sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and a heart attack. Although both are cardiac emergencies that require immediate medical attention, they are different in causes, symptoms, and treatment. In this blog post we are going to lay out the differences and provide essential information to help you respond effectively in an emergency.
Sudden cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating due to an electrical disturbance. This abrupt stop causes an end to blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. Without immediate aid, SCA can lead to death within minutes.
SCA is often caused by an electrical malfunction in the heart that results in an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). The most common life-threatening arrhythmia that leads to SCA is ventricular fibrillation. In ventricular fibrillation, the heart's lower chambers quiver ineffectively instead of pumping blood, stopping blood flow to the body's organs, including the brain. If not treated immediately, SCA can lead to death.
A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, happens when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked for a long enough time that part of the heart becomes damaged. The blockage is often a result of coronary artery disease, which is a build-up of plaque in the arteries.
Heart attacks are commonly caused by plaque buildup in the coronary arteries rather than an issue with the heart itself. Someone experiencing a heart attack might experience radiating pain, shortness of breath, nausea, lightheadedness, or cold sweats.
Ā
Ā
Emergency preparedness for SCA and Heart Attacks is crucial in our society as they can both occur anywhere at any given time. Recognizing the signs of these emergencies, having an AED readily available, and being trained in CPR all can help increase the chances of survival for a victim until professional help arrives. At AED Professionals, we ensure a commitment to top-tier quality, expertise, and comprehensive customer support. In the event of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) a quick response with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is vital for increasing the chances of survival. Whether you are applying the pads to an adult or child, it is important to know how to properly apply the AED pads to ensure adequate help is being given.
Always call or ask bystanders to call 911 before applying the AED.
The first step to placing AED pads on an adult is to remove anything that might affect or obstruct the adhesion and conductivity of the shock. Some things to look out for include jewelry, body hair, and moisture.
Ā
Ā
Even though AED pads are sealed before use, the FDA assigns expiration dates based on the tested integrity of componentry to ensure that pads are working at their full strength when they are needed. Pads have an expiration date due to the aging of the pad's conductive adhesive. Worn out or old pads may not adhere properly to the victim and could impede with the delivery of a life saving shock.

When a victim falls due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), every second counts towards saving aĀ life.
Like millions of you, I watched in horror Monday night as Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin
collapsed after taking a hit on the football field in Cincinnati. Damarās life was saved thanks to
the medical staff's heroics. CPR was immediately administered, but we now know an
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was also used to save the young manās life. Thankfully, it
appears he will fully recover, and now we have a teachable moment for our nation and theĀ world.
AEDs save lives, and my only business is saving lives.
As the president and owner of AED Professionals in Palatine, Illinois, itās been my lifeās work to
spread the word about SCA and how an AED can save you. But what is it exactly? Youāve
probably walked past one hanging on a wall at the mall or a stadium, not knowing what it is or
does. An AED helps analyze the heart rhythm of an SCA victim to detect whether the individual
requires a shock or not. These are not the dramatic shock paddles youāve watched TV doctors
use. With minimal training, anyone can use an AED. The technology has advanced significantly
within each unit, making it easier than ever for any individual to use during a crisis.
And it doesnāt take a hard football hit at full speed to suffer SCA. Itās the number one cause of
natural death in the United States. More than 300,000 people die every year due to SCA.
Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away at fifty when she suffered from SCA. If someone
had administered CPR and an AED had been available at the time of her collapse, she mightĀ have survived.
While the NFL and other professional leagues mandate that AEDs are on-site, more must be
made available to the public when someone suffers an SCA. Some states require CPR and AED
training depending on the school or the job, while others only encourage it.
Itās time we push this to become a national requirement.
I aim to bring awareness and accessibility to life-saving techniques and devices in any location
where people congregate. It doesnāt matter how old, active, or healthy we think we may be;
SCA can happen to anyone at any time. The chances of survival of an SCA victim fall 10% every
minute. Every minute of my day is spent educating people on what these incredible devices canĀ do.
Letās make it everyoneās business to help save lives.
