AEDs in Schools

According to the National Library of Medicine, studies indicate that the use of an AED to treat cardiac arrest nearly doubles the rate of survival. As such, the presence of AEDs in public spaces such as schools, universities, and community facilities is an important first aid tool, especially given the dire need for treatment within the first few minutes following a cardiac event.

Are AEDs required in schools?

Currently, there is no federal law mandating AEDs in schools. However, the American Heart Association reports that more than 30 states including the District of Columbia either require AEDs in schools or have policies in place regarding the acquisition, access, use and maintenance of AEDs in schools.

In 2024, the US Congress passed the Cardiomyopathy, Health Education, Awareness, Research and Training in Schools (HEARTS) Act creating a grant program at the US Department of Health and Human Services to support CPR and AED training and the purchase of more AED devices in schools.

Are AEDs required in schools?

The following states require the placement of AEDs in schools. These states include:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Texas
  • West Virginia

Many states don’t mandate the placement of AEDs in schools but leave policy and decision-making about school placement up to independent districts and school management.

Can You Use a Standard AED on a Child?

You can use a standard AED on a child. It is preferable to administer treatment using pediatric AED pads or utilizing the AED on a pediatric setting. If neither are available, adult AED pads can be used provided they’re placed properly, not touching or overlapping, with one on the chest and one on the back of the child.

Best AEDs for Schools

If your state requires AED placement in elementary and secondary schools or your district is interested in purchasing AEDs for your schools, you want to choose the best ones available within your budget. The following are some factors to consider when choosing AEDs:

  • Is your AEDs from a reputable brand manufacturer? Read product specs, research industry expert opinions, and consider customer reviews.
  • Is the AED you’re considering easy to use and operate? Precious seconds count during a cardiac event. You want an AED that is intuitive to use and easy to operate.
  • Does the AED offer real-time guidance? Audio prompts can help guide a person to administer aid more quickly and easily.
  • Does the AED have pediatric capabilities with pediatric pads or pediatric mode setting? This is critical, especially if you’re choosing an AED for a school setting.
  • Is the AED durable and reliable? Again, refer to industry experts’ opinions to help you determine this.
  • Is your AED easy to maintain and offer a long battery life? You’ll want to make sure that the AED you choose is the best quality for your investment.
