ZOLL AED 3 vs LIFEPAK CR2: Full Comparison for Workplace Buyers - AED Professionals

ZOLL AED 3 vs LIFEPAK CR2: Full Comparison for Workplace Buyers

These two are the premium end of the workplace AED market, and they share something no other AED does: both cover adults and children from a single electrode set. Neither needs paediatric pads. That makes them the two lowest-maintenance AEDs you can buy — and the choice between them comes down to money over a decade, not money today.

Ten-year cost of ownership

This is the number that actually decides it, and it inverts the sticker price. An AED lives 8 to 10 years, so what matters is how many times you buy consumables across that life.

ZOLL AED 3 LIFEPAK CR2
Device $2,399 $2,256
Consumable replacements needed 1 (year 5) 2 (years 4 and 8)
Pads + battery per cycle $248 + $207 = $455 $188 + $327 = $515
Consumables over 10 years $455 $1,030
Ten-year total $2,854 $3,286

Assumptions: prices as of August 2026 at published rates; no deployment during the period; device retired at year 10; excludes cabinet, signage and training. Your actual figures will differ if the unit is ever used.

The AED 3 costs $143 more and saves you $432

Five-year pads and a five-year battery mean the AED 3 needs one consumable purchase in a decade. The CR2's four-year cycle needs two. That is roughly $432 less over ten years despite the higher purchase price — and, just as valuable, one fewer occasion for someone to forget.

Where the CR2 wins

Cost is not the only axis, and there are two real arguments for the CR2.

The eight-year warranty. Against ZOLL's five (seven with registration), that is meaningful risk transfer on a device you hope never to use. If your programme is judged on capital risk rather than operating cost, this matters.

cprINSIGHT. On connected models, the CR2 analyses the heart rhythm while compressions continue. Every other AED, including the AED 3, requires a pause to analyse — the AED 3 keeps its pause to 8 seconds, but it is still a pause. Interruptions to compressions are among the strongest modifiable predictors of survival, so if your responders are trained and this is a clinical priority, it is a genuine advantage rather than a spec-sheet flourish.

Where the AED 3 wins

Lifetime cost and fewer touchpoints, as above — one reorder instead of two.

Real CPR Help measures depth, not just rate. A metronome tells an untrained rescuer how fast to compress. The AED 3 tells them whether they are pushing hard enough, with a colour bar gauge on the screen. Most lay rescuers compress too shallow, so for an AED that will be grabbed by whoever is nearest, this is the more useful of the two feedback systems.

The touchscreen. Genuinely helpful for configuration and post-event review without external software.

Our verdict

Your situation Buy
Office, school, gym, church — untrained rescuers likely ZOLL AED 3
Lowest total cost over the device's life ZOLL AED 3
Nobody reliably tracks expiration dates ZOLL AED 3 (one reorder)
Trained responders, minimising CPR pauses matters LIFEPAK CR2 (cprINSIGHT)
Longest warranty / capital risk aversion LIFEPAK CR2 (8 years)
Bilingual site (English/Spanish prompts) LIFEPAK CR2 (connected models)

For the majority of workplace buyers we speak to, the AED 3 is the better purchase — lower lifetime cost, better feedback for untrained hands, half the reorder events. The CR2 earns its place where the warranty length or cprINSIGHT is specifically valued.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ZOLL AED 3 or LIFEPAK CR2 cheaper?

The CR2 has a lower purchase price ($2,256 vs $2,399), but the AED 3 is cheaper over ten years — roughly $2,854 against $3,286 — because its five-year pads and battery need only one replacement cycle instead of two.

Do either need separate pediatric pads?

No. Both cover adults and children from one electrode set: the AED 3 uses CPR Uni-padz with a Child Mode softkey, and the CR2 uses QUIK-STEP electrodes with a Child Mode button. They are the only two mainstream AEDs that eliminate paediatric pads entirely.

What is cprINSIGHT?

A LIFEPAK CR2 feature, available on connected models, that analyses the patient's heart rhythm while chest compressions continue, reducing pauses in CPR. Most AEDs, including the ZOLL AED 3, require a brief pause to analyse.

Which has the better CPR feedback?

The AED 3's Real CPR Help measures both compression rate and depth and displays depth on a colour bar gauge. The CR2 provides coaching and a metronome. For untrained rescuers, who typically compress too shallow, depth feedback is more useful.
