Stop the Bleed Kits

According to the National Institute of Health, uncontrolled bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death from trauma. In fact, from the time of the victim’s trauma until medical personnel administer definitive medical care in an Emergency Department, a median 57 minutes will have passed. That’s why immediate medical intervention is critical to a bleeding trauma victim. It’s also why you’ll find bleeding control kits in workplaces, schools, public buildings, law enforcement agencies, and military settings.

What are Stop the Bleed Kits?

Stop the Bleed Kits are first-aid kits specifically designed to assist a bystander control and stop bleeding for a victim of trauma. These essential kits provide immediate assistance in the first few critical moments before emergency responders arrive.

Stop the Bleed kits are a part of the national Stop the Bleed campaign, born in response to the tragic Sandy Hook school shooting. The campaign was backed by the American College of Surgeons and the Department of Homeland Security with the intent of teaching civilians how to save lives during emergencies such as shootings, car accidents, or catastrophic events.

Stop the Bleed kits contain essential equipment designed to stop hemorrhaging, control blood flow, and assist in blood clotting.

What Do Bleeding Control Kits Typically Contain?

Most kits typically contain the following essential items:

  • Tourniquets to constrict blood flow
  • Compressed gauze to pack deep wounds
  • Hemostatic dressing infused with clotting agents
  • Trauma shears to cut through clothing and quickly access a wound
  • Gloves to protect both the victim and the responder
  • Emergency bandages to apply pressure to wounds
  • Instructional guide on bleeding control techniques

Why Are Stop the Bleed Kits Critically Important?

A victim of uncontrolled severe bleeding can die in under five minutes. Stop the Bleed kits aid in providing a quick response when time is critical. They can help bystanders respond to a bleeding trauma victim before emergency responders arrive. While there are Stop the Bleed training courses available online and in person, training is not required to utilize the equipment in a Stop the Bleed kit. Anyone with the most basic knowledge of controlling bleeding can make use of a Stop the Bleed kit and lend assistance to victims.

What Are the ABCs of Stop the Bleed?

The key to controlling bleeding and administering aid are referred to as the ABCs of Stop the Bleed:

  • Alert: Call 911 and access a Stop the Bleed Kit
  • Bleeding: Identify the location of the wound and remove or cut clothing to provide access to the injury
  • Compress: Apply direct pressure or a tourniquet according to instructions. For injuries to the neck, shoulder, or groin, pack the wound with hemostatic gauze.
